The third and final article on Round 1 of the NAB Challenge will cover players from West Coast Eagles v Fremantle, GWS Giants v Sydney and Western Bulldogs v St Kilda.

A few players locked themselves into thousands of fantasy teams, while some others put doubts on their prospects for 2014.

Xavier Ellis –Midfielder

SC Starting price: $159,100

Fantasy Starting price: $135,500

DT Starting price: $163,900

2013 SC Average: 21.5

2013 DT/Fantasy average: 30

SC score v Fremantle: 89

DT/Fantasy score v Fremantle: 72

Xavier Ellis became a fantasy lock after a fantastic performance for his new team. He won a lot of the ball, used it well and looks to be a starting 21 player for the Eagles. Very cheap in all three competitions and will provide high job security and great scoring for your midfield. One of the most secure rookie picks this year.

Dom Sheed –Midfielder

SC Starting price: $167,300

Fantasy Starting price: $235,800

DT Starting price: $162,800

2013 SC Average: N/A

2013 DT/Fantasy average: N/A

SC score v Fremantle: 41

DT/Fantasy score v Fremantle: 61

Sheed won the Larke Medal in the Under 18 championships, after averaging 28 disposals in his four games for WA. Not assured of being named in West Coast’s Round 1 side, so you’ll need to follow his upcoming matches in the pre-season to gauge if he can win a debut.

Aaron Sandilands –Ruck

SC Starting price: $310,700

Fantasy Starting price: $244,500

DT Starting price: $270,800

2013 SC Average: 64.0

2013 DT/Fantasy average: 49.6

SC score v West Coast Eagles: 91

DT/Fantasy score v West Coast Eagles: 71

Aaron Sandilands’ interrupted 2013 has made him extremely good value in 2014. If he manages to avoid injury this year, he’ll be the best pick in fantasy football. It’s very rare you can select a premium for around $300k. His hitout against West Coast showed no signs of injury, so he’s a certain starter for the Dockers in round 1 at this stage.

Lin Jong – Midfielder

SC Starting price: $157,800

Fantasy Starting price: $215,300

DT Starting price: $155,000

2013 SC Average: N/A

2013 DT/Fantasy average: N/A

SC score v St Kilda: 70

DT/Fantasy score v St Kilda: 73

Ling Jong enters his third year at the Dogs looking to establish a spot in league side. Jong had a solid game against the Saints, having 13 disposals and an impressive 10 tackles, the most for the game. Another good performance will give Jong an opportunity to play Round 1, making him a viable fantasy option if he’s named against West Coast.

Matthew Boyd –Midfielder

SC Starting price: $560,100

Fantasy Starting price: $563,300

DT Starting price: $567,700

2013 SC Average: 103.9

2013 DT/Fantasy average: 103.9

SC score v St Kilda: 150

DT/Fantasy score v St Kilda: 120

If his performance against St Kilda is anything to go by, Boyd’s scoring ability isn’t slowing down any time soon. Boyd had 27 disposals, one goal, seven marks and five tackles in a BOG performance at Kardinia Park. Should be a POD in your midfield and will provide some big scores, especially in Fantasy/DT.

Jack Billings–Forward/Midfielder

SC Starting price: $207,300

Fantasy Starting price: $257,400

DT Starting price: $202,800

2013 SC Average: N/A

2013 DT/Fantasy average: N/A

SC score v Western Bulldogs: 14

DT/Fantasy score v Western Bulldogs: 15

The highly rated youngster started as the sub and struggled to get into the game after coming on in the third quarter. At his price tag, will need a standout game for fantasy coaches to consider him in their forward line. Job security low compared to other rookies, and scoring capability is small based on the small evidence available so far.

Tom Mitchell –Forward/Midfielder

SC Starting price: $464,800

Fantasy Starting price: $488,700

DT Starting price: $492,600

2013 SC Average: 86.2

2013 DT/Fantasy average: 90.2

SC score v GWS Giants: 152

DT/Fantasy score v GWS Giants: 138

Any question marks over possible second year blues were quashed fairly quickly, after a dominant display against GWS. Mitchell racked up 34 disposals, two goals, six marks and six tackles, translating into a massive score of 138 in DT/Fantasy and 152 in SuperCoach. While it’s unlikely he’ll produce these types of numbers on a regular basis, he should be a premium forward in all comps this year.

Heath Shaw –Defender

SC Starting price: $522,600

Fantasy Starting price: $441,300

DT Starting price: $444,800

2013 SC Average: 96.9

2013 DT/Fantasy average: 81.4

SC score v Sydney Swans: 48

DT/Fantasy score v Sydney Swans: 52

Difficult to make a judgement after to just one game, but a quiet performance from Shaw did nothing to improve his status as a potential premium in fantasy backlines. Shaw only had 13 disposals against Sydney, including just four marks, one tackle and no goals. Will need to improve significantly against St Kilda this week to give fantasy coaches some confidence in selecting him.

Shane Mumford – Ruck

SC Starting price: $496,000

Fantasy Starting price: $423,000

DT Starting price: $426,400

2013 SC Average: 92.0

2013 DT/Fantasy average: 78.1

SC score v Sydney Swans: 75

DT/Fantasy score v Sydney Swans: 82

Mumford was solid in his first game for his new club, registering 13 disposals and 30 hit outs, 22 more than Jonathan Giles. This game suggests Mumford will be GWS’ number 1 ruckman for 2014, but Giles place in the team may prevent Mumford from becoming a fantasy premium. Another game will be needed to obtain a clearer answer on whether Mumford can score big this year.
