Round 1 of the NAB Challenge is complete, with a number of intriguing performances by fantasy relevant players occurring over the past nine days. Part one of these review articles will focus on the first three matches, with three players per match discussed. Part two will feature players from North Melbourne v Carlton, Adelaide v Port Adelaide and Gold Coast v Essendon. Part three will focus on players from Fremantle v West Coast, Western Bulldogs v St Kilda and GWS v Sydney.

Corey Enright – Defender

SC Starting price: $506,800

Fantasy Starting price: $480,300

DT Starting price:  $484,100

2013 SC Average: 94.0

2013 DT/Fantasy average: 88.6

SC score v Collingwood: 86

DT/Fantasy score v Collingwood: 128

Enright racked up possessions at will in the half back line, setting up the play as a loose man. Didn’t appear to show any signs of slowing down in 2014, so he’ll again be a very reliable premium in your backline.

Taylor Adams – Midfielder

SC Starting price: $410,900

Fantasy Starting price: $445,400

DT Starting price: $449,000

2013 SC Average: 76.2

2013 DT/Fantasy average: 82.2

SC score v Geelong: 90

DT/Fantasy score v Geelong: 116

A switch of clubs could see Taylor Adams explode into a premium scoring midfielder. The young gun put up some big numbers against Geelong and would be a fantastic buy if he can replicate this form in the regular season.

Brodie Grundy –Ruck

SC Starting price: $363,300

Fantasy Starting price: $335,500

DT Starting price: $345,800

2013 SC Average: 74.8

2013 DT/Fantasy average: 70.3

SC score v Geelong: 63

DT/Fantasy score v Geelong: 74

Grundy became Collingwood’s number 1 ruckman in quick time after he debuted last year and he will hold that mantle in 2014. Posted solid numbers in his first hit out, and could be worth a spot in your rucks if he ups his scores to around 85+ in all formats. Good value considering his potential.

James Aish–Midfielder

SC Starting price: $187,300

Fantasy Starting price: $246,600

DT Starting price: $182,800

2013 SC Average: N/A

2013 DT/Fantasy average: N/A

SC score v Hawthorn: 53

DT/Fantasy score v Hawthorn 66

The dual SANFL premiership player with Norwood had a solid debut with Brisbane considering the smashing the Lions copped at the hands of the Hawks. Should play a number of games in 2014 so he’ll be one you can rely on in your starting midfield.

Matthew Suckling –Defender

SC Starting price: $312,200

Fantasy Starting price: $314,400

DT Starting price: $316,800

2013 SC Average: N/A

2013 DT/Fantasy average: N/A

SC score v Brisbane: 70

DT/Fantasy score v Brisbane 83

One of the premier defender premiums in 2012 is heavily discounted due to his ACL injury in 2013. Considering his starting price, he should be seriously considered for your starting side in all three competitions. Will be the substitute against North Melbourne in Hawthorn’s 2nd NAB Challenge game.

Liam Shiels–Midfielder

SC Starting price: $331,300

Fantasy Starting price: $343,800

DT Starting price: $346,500

2013 SC Average: 61.4

2013 DT/Fantasy average: 63.3

SC score v Brisbane: 100

DT/Fantasy score v Brisbane 122

Liam Shiels posted some enormous scores in 2011, averaging 102.8 Fantasy/DT points. His form since then has dropped way off, resulting in his price falling well into the mid-price range. Had 28 disposals and two goals against Brisbane, so there are some small signs that he could recapture his 2011 form. A big risk, but one that could pay off.

Bernie Vince –Midfielder

SC Starting price: $424,300

Fantasy Starting price: $449,300

DT Starting price: $452,900

2013 SC Average: 78.7

2013 DT/Fantasy average: 82.9

SC score v Richmond: 115

DT/Fantasy score v Richmond 105

Bernie Vince looked a rejuvenated man in his new colours, moving across the field with ease and winning plenty of the ball. Will be one of Melbourne’s premier midfielders, so his numbers should take a considerable spike on last year.

Dom Tyson –Midfielder

SC Starting price: $216,800

Fantasy Starting price: $218,400

DT Starting price: $250,700

2013 SC Average: 44.7

2013 DT/Fantasy average: 51

SC score v Richmond: 38

DT/Fantasy score v Richmond: 56

Was OK against Richmond but considering his job security is good compared to a number of other midfield rookies, he’s one of the more secure options in your midfield. Didn’t do enough to make him a round 1 lock though. Watch closely in round 2 of the NAB Challenge.

Jay Kennedy-Harris –Forward

SC Starting price: $117,300

Fantasy Starting price: $157,200

DT Starting price: $112,800

2013 SC Average: N/A

2013 DT/Fantasy average: N/A

SC score v Richmond: 99

DT/Fantasy score v Richmond: 67

Kennedy-Harris was a livewire up forward for the Demons, kicking three goals including the match winner. While he didn’t win a lot of the ball, his effectiveness saw his SuperCoach score dwarf his DT/Fantasy score of 67. A good chance to play round 1 and will be a cheap option in your forward line.
